Robert Zeppel-Sperl

Robert Zeppel-Sperl, born in Leoben, Austria in 1944, studied from 1962 to 1970 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and Max Weiler. He was a member of the Vienna Secession and co-founder of the artists' group "Realities", which wanted to assert itself alongside the "fantastic realists" and the group "nächst St. Stephan". His style is characterized by ornamentally interwoven depictions of nature and their inherent mythical creatures, as well as portraits of women. He was influenced by old masters such as Hieronymus Bosch and international contemporary art and comics. He mainly worked on large format acrylic paintings. From 1969 he moved to Venice to create glass sculptures for the Berengo glass factory in Murano. In 1977 he moved to the USA and eventually lived and worked in Vienna, Venice and Bali, where he set up a studio in 1990.
